National Heritage, as a public body responsible for property owned by the State that comes from the legacy of the Spanish Crown set out in Law 23/1982, of June 16, of the National Heritage wozz2do , has as main purposes the fundamental support to the Head of the State for the high representation that the Constitution and laws attribute to it, as well as making available to citizens the historical-artistic heritage that it manages through its use for cultural, scientific and teaching purposes.

The diverse nature of the goods and the compatibility of their uses mean that the public service work to which National Heritage is due is wide and complex.

This institution manages 19 palaces, monasteries, royal convents and annexed buildings, open to public visit, which constitute the network of Royal Sites  royal armoury of madrid, and which house more than 154,000 historical-artistic pieces of all disciplines (painting, sculpture, tapestries, watches , goldsmithing, archives, libraries, musical instruments and furniture, among others) that constitute an essential part of the Spanish cultural heritage, being signed by the best artists of all times. To this is added an important natural heritage constituted by historic gardens, forests and other natural spaces that, among them, reach 22,000 hectares and house a great quantity of wild fauna.

The National Heritage Board of Directors is configured as a public law entity organically dependent on the Presidency of the Government.
